Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, did not want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. She began acting to connect with new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated to New York in search of television roles. Her small part was on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness led her to California to find theater work. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013. She performed with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she played a supporting role in the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. In the same year, she was cast as the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young version of her mother's. She was cast in the role in spite of her strong family connection to the character.
